A Birdseye view on Pico de Areeiro, the third highest peak (1.818 meteres) in Madeira. Easy access by car. From there you could do a 3 hours hike around the Pico das Torres, the highest mountain of the island. Great views!
Perched on clifftop among 4 hektar (10 acres) of subtropical gardens sits an elegant world-class retreat with spectacular ocean views and a famous tea-terrace: the Reid´s. This Belmond property boasts 158 rooms and suites, three pools, among them a little sea-water pool carved into the rocks at almost sea level which you can acces only by an outside “sea-elevator”. After a partly renovation the Reid`seems a bit lighter but it still kepts its unique mixture of British heritage and Madeira`s subtropical charm. For more than a century this palace has welcomed famous guests. Rooms vary in size and furniture and if you can afford it book a room in the old part looking straight to the Atlantic. Foodwise there are three options: Our favourite the Villa Cipriani, just a few meters outside the hotel, which serves fingerlicking good Italian cuisine. For a gourmet-experience there is the Michelin starred William Restaurant where you can dine fine surrounded by elegant columns and 19th century chandeliers. And of course there is the pool bar for a light bite lazying in the sun. Not to mention the world famous afternoon tea on the terrace. And if you intend to stroll through the lanes of Old Funchal it´s just a ten minutes walk. If you book the right room this Heritage Hotel is a delight.
