When you go to places where you do not know exactly what to expect most people trust renowned brands. Brands like Kempinski, that derives from Berthold Kempinski and his family who pioneered luxury hotellerie in Germany. For a long time the Kempinski group was owned by Thailand`s Royal family, since 2017 the sheiks from Bahrein have taken over. So among the 79 Kempinski properties in 31 countries there is also a hotel in the emptiest country in the world, Mongolia.
Let´s start with the things not so good:
*The Kempinski hotel Khan palace is not right in the center of Mongolia´s capital. The hotel is located at the heart of Bayanzurkh district and 2,2 kilometers away from the central Chinggis Khan square.
*Secondly there is no swimming pool.
*Some parts of the property would need investment for refurbishment and a more modern look.
Good
Nevertheless the hotel offers spacious rooms, three restaurants, a really good breakfast buffet – and the rates are considerably lower, roundabout 50 percent, than the rates of the Shangri La which is considered number one in Ulan Bator when it comes to standards of luxury. Though it is not the five star standard that the best of Kempinski properties can offer the Khan Palace is under a tough German management and offers a good standard for a reasonable price.
