Taking a one hour flight from Bali to East Java you end up in the buzzling city of Surabaya, Indonesia´s second biggest city. And in the heart of it is a magic place that keeps the huzzle and buzzle outside and transfers you into another time, into the 1900ies. That is the Majapahit, once founded by the famous Sarkies brothers (see our movie), a 143 rooms and suites heritage property. It is a five star hotel managed by Accor. And well its service, its lack of state of the art facilities and some other details prevent the place to reach the luxury level of let`s say a Four Seasons hotel. But the architecture, the design, the quality of the food, the chance for time travel is simply phantastic. The Indigo restaurant serves international food on a high level and the Sarkies takes you to China in the 30ies. Of course there is a great pool and a wonderfully oldfashioned Spa like in an Agatha Christie movie. Great garden. The Grand City Mall is just five minutes walking away. Rooms are much bigger than in a Four Seasons Hotel: The classic rooms has 44 sqm (473 sqft). As the Majapahit is a bit off the usual tourist track and a bit fallen out of time – which we love – it is also one of the cheapest five-star-hotels in the world. Great time travel, great experience.
