My first encounter with the D’Angleterre was watching an Alfred Hitchcock classic from 1966 starring Paul Newman and Julie Andrews, a spy story depicting this legendary hotel in some scenes which had Winston Churchill as a guest, where “desert fox” Marshal Rommel from the German Wehrmacht stayed when they used the hotel as a heaquarter, and where legions of musicians stayed.
AN ICREDIBLE GUEST LIST
They were all here: from Neil Young to the Rolling Stones, from Guns N’ Roses to Madonna, from Pink Floyd to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, from Dire Straits to Elton John, from Bryan Ferry, Robbie Williams, Johny Cash, Eurythmics, Status Quo, Deep Purple, Joe Cocker, INXS, Eric Calpton, Billiy Joel up to Kyle Minogue. We got to stop the namedropping. Not to mention the heads of states and the Hollywood actors A-list.
OUR IMPRESSIONS
This hotel is really famous, but is it good? Well, the location is top, it is very, very central at Kings Square and Nyhavn (the colourful Harbour tourist spot), it is elegant and it is expensive. Yes. But what´s a hotel really like that does not publish the rate for its Royal suite? We learned nevertheless that you usually can get the top luxury suite at a rate somewhere between 10.000 and 2o.ooo Euro a night.
You never get a second chance for a first impression, they say, and the first impression is a very friendly staff. Then you pass by a lively al-fresco place outside, where you can have a meal or a coffee and watch the people passing by. Then you encounter elegance when you enter the D*Angleterre you almost stumble into a huge beautiful flower bouquet done by the hotel’s own flower shop.
DETAILS
Breakfast is really good but you get aware that you should not talk about money here, you should have it. If you are a hotel guest and your rate includes the breakfast and you order eggs benedict you still have to pay a surcharge: 28 Euro. However the hotels’ one-Michelin-star Gourmet restaurant Marchal does miracles and things real gourmets love. Like getting a can of caviar on a beautiful plate, but well just a CAN of caviar. I will always enjoy a can of caviar but JUST A CAN? Then you open it and you find out there are three layers: the caviar on top, a lobster layer, and a kind of potato something layer. Wow. The rooms represent classic elegance, high class televison sets, and it is very hard to find something to complain. The architecture of the builiding, especially the staircases, is beautiful and there are a lot of modern paintings in the house as the owner loves art. Is there a pool? Of course and a real big one. Yes and there is a spa, a really good one.
RESUMÉ
So all in all the Hotel D’Angleterre is a place where you do not want to leave voluntarily, at least for a while, especially if you also consider the own icecream shop and the 200 champaign varieties bar.
But at the end, when you check out, you will leave with a smile though you should be bold when your credit card glows.
