It takes a long time to travel to Easter Island. In my case half a lifetime from the first dream of Easter Island to the actual arrival, but it is also a long way geographically spoken. These are the three most remote inhabitated islands in the world: Tristan de Cunha, 2,8 kkm (1,732 miles) from Cape Town in South Africa, Pitcairn Island, 5500 km (3400 miles) from any large body of land, Easter Island, 3,512 km (2,2 miles) to the shores of South America, Conception in Chile, to be precise. So it is a long way to go and it´s a magic place with almost 900 stone statues called Moai. And for most visitors it is a once in a lifetime experience. For all those reasons it makes sense to stay at the best, the most desirable hotel on the island even if rates are as impressive as some Moais. This unique resort sanctuary on a unique island is Explora Rapa Nui. What´s so special about it is not just an extraordinary futuristic architecture, upscale accomodation, a great pool and the suberb food you get here but the experience included all inclusive approach of Explora Rapa Nui. The “room rate” includes not only all meals and all drinks even at the Explorer´s bar in the evening but also a full scale excursion programme with really good guides. Guests can choose among 30 including guided hikes, bike rides, snorkeling, and scuba diving excursions designed to immerse them in Rapa Nui’s singular culture. At our stay the high end resort established in 1993 had a low occupancy and we did all our tours except for one just with the driver and the guide in our “own” minivan. One of our best tours lead us underground because Easter island boasts not only of the worldfamous statues but also of a lot of mysterious caves. But back to basics: the accomodation. There are only 30 rooms, all looking at least partly to the sea, 26 Varúa rooms measuring 32m² (345 feet²) and Raa suites measuring 44m² (474 feet²). The rooms are not everyone`s taste: a combination of raw concrete, dark and lighter wood, very high, which is a form of luxury. There are no fridges, aircondition, and television in the rooms. But who cares when there is a nightly sky full of stars in the middle of the ocean.
